"Just as the world was ushering in the new century, I collapsed. Knowing the rules of the HMO policy our company had at the time, my primary care physician was called ( it was late Sunday evening) and we were advised to go to the emergency room. I was stabilized and tested and finally found out that I had Hepatitis C with liver failure contracted from a blood transfusion many years before. My only hope was a liver transplant. You can imagine how overwhelming this news was and so many questions on how to proceed. My agency, of course, was told of my condition and our lead customer service person suggested that my case be handled in our office just like any other client. That being decided, calls were made to physicians and specialists, the insurance carrier, and UNOS (United Network Organ Sharing). Much coordination was necessary to keep all the appointments, tests and medications in order. As liver failure affects the brain function also, this was an overwhelmingly impossible task for me but a great task to test our philosophy of customer care. Unsurprisingly, our customer service came through with flying colors – schedules of appointments, coordination of tests, and finally making the transplant list.
Just over 2 years from my initial diagnosis and illness progression, I received the call that I was to get a transplant that day. I had major complications with the surgery and contracted just about every infection known to man. After 2 months in the hospital, most of it in intensive care, it was time to go home. Good for me but more work for our people coordinating, home health care, open wound care, blood tests every other day, liver clinic appointments at least once a week, ordering and planning administration of at least 30 different medications.
Fast forward 5 years and things are much calmed down. I am doing great – taking a minimal amount of medication, have a strong new liver, am disease free, and living life again. In some quiet times, like when I am fishing, I look back on that period and realize the value of the service that was given to me.. my new life.
Because of the gift I was given, I have made it our agency’s commitment to provide the same service to individuals as well as our group clients and hope you will contact us to see how our services can be customized to your health needs."
